“Being in communications has helped me be a better mom. The skills we learn in this industry carry over in dealing with our kids: the way we listen to them, speak to them, have hard conversations with them. It’s taught me a lot,” Audra Mincey says.

Audra’s career started as a television news reporter. Here she is reporting for KWGN in Denver, CO.
I graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Technical Journalism. I got my start in communications as a college news anchor and reporter for our Campus Television News. After graduation, I pursued a career as a television news reporter and worked for stations in Lincoln, Nebraska and Denver, Colorado.
I enjoyed my time in the news business but ventured into public relations and marketing where I received the chance to work in industries such as healthcare, non-profit and consumer goods. I decided to leave the corporate world in 2019 and started my own agency, Moov Public Relations. I have really loved working with such a variety of different clients. I have also been a member of PRSA and AAJA in Colorado.
FAVORITE CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
My favorite career success is starting my own agency because it has given me the freedom to not only be my own boss but also be more present for my family. The second accomplishment would be having the opportunity to work in a top 20 news market as a young reporter. It just so happened to be my hometown!
One of Audra’s most notable assignments as a news reporter was covering the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
DID YOUR CAREER GOALS AND/OR OUTLOOK CHANGE ONCE YOU HAD A CHILD?
My career goals didn’t change but my outlook did. When my first son was born, I knew I wanted more time with my family but also didn’t want to give up working a job that fulfilled my passions. I just knew that it was going to take time to find the right fit to have the flexibility for more family time as a career mom. Thankfully, the right fit came along at that time!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING IN COMMUNICATIONS AND WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS A GREAT INDUSTRY FOR MOMS?
Storytelling is my passion. I love being able to help tell stories in different ways and seeing the impact it can make for a person, a business, a cause. I think this industry is great for moms because there are so many diverse options to still work and have the flexibility for your family. You just have to find what works best for you and your situation!
WHAT DON’T YOU LIKE ABOUT THE INDUSTRY AS IT RELATES TO MOMS?
I think it depends on the sector you are in. There can be times when you’re on call, working overtime, or have to travel. That can be hard for moms but as we always do, we figure out how to make it work!

WHAT ARE YOUR THREE TO FIVE BEST PIECES OF ADVICE FOR COMMS MOMS?
- Find the career situation that best works for you and your family and know that every season in life has its purpose.
- When it’s time to clock out, do it and don’t look back. Unless you’re on-call or there is an emergency, that email or phone call can wait.
- Quality time beats out quantity time with family. So when you get time with your family, make it all about them even if it’s for an hour.
